Personal Search Engine

Instantly search across thousands of your local files without the cloud.

About Personal Search Engine

The Personal Search Engine allows you to build a lightning-fast, offline search index of your own files right inside your browser. If you have a massive folder of notes, code snippets, or CSVs and standard OS search is too slow, this tool is the perfect alternative. It reads all text-based files into your browser's memory, giving you sub-second, full-text search capabilities across your personal knowledge base—with zero privacy risks.

Features

How to Use

  1. Click 'Select Folder to Index' and choose the directory containing your files.
  2. Allow the browser permission to read the files locally.
  3. Wait for the progress bar to reach 100% (usually takes seconds for thousands of files).
  4. Start typing your query in the large search bar.
  5. Click on any result to see the file name and the highlighted text snippet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens when I close the tab?

Because the search index is stored securely in your browser's temporary memory (RAM), it is completely wiped out when you close or refresh the tab. You will need to re-index the folder the next time.

Does it search inside PDFs or Word documents?

Currently, it only supports plain-text formats like .txt, .md, .csv, .json, and source code files. PDFs and .docx files are binary formats and are not yet supported for instant indexing.

Will this slow down my computer?

If you try to index millions of files, your browser might consume a lot of RAM. We recommend indexing specific project folders or document directories rather than your entire C: drive.
